Trash is the go to atm
I just whichever i like: Camelcrushern, Fuzzplus, and Klanghelm Free Distortion Plugin are mostly what i use
How did I not know klanghelm has a free distortion plugin? Just got their amazing mjuc compressor
iZotope Trash, CamelPhat, D16 Devastator, Blue Cat Destructor, just to name a few.
Fabfilter saturn, izotope trash 2 and ohmicide.
Saturn is probably my favourite.
serum's distortion effect is pretty amazing... especially when you get into filtering pre or post
but other than that, saturn's pretty nice
No one plugin
All 4 of these are different in terms of dynamics reduction and character. Don't skimp on distortion, it's just as important as reverb/delay/compression/EQ in mixing, and also crucial on sound design
Do you recommend any resources for reading about why distortion is important for mixing?
Just for a point of reference, any processing that adds "analog warmth" is a distortion effect, whether it's actually analog or analog-modeled. "Distortion" is so broad of a category of sound transformation that I'd say it's arguably a bigger category than compression or eq - in fact often the reason a particular compressor or EQ sound good is because of the character of distortion they add, that is, it's often the distortion you get as a side effect of compression or analog-modeled EQ that ends up being most desirable.
camel crusher is sick
Just got trash 2 n loving using their presets as a jumping off point, powerful convolution reverb included too. Before that was Saturn all day, great control with the multi-bands, but I wasn't getting any wild n transformative results like the trash provides.
FabFilter Saturn is so god damn flexible.
TRASH 2 BABY
Filterbank2 (good variety of distortions, but the tube is my favorite) and Avox Warm (super warm, analog-sounding saturator).
Avox is basically my secret weapon for getting super full sounds.
Krush and it's free. I LOVE IT!
Anything Kush Audio, scheps omni is nice, Decapitator & Saturn are alright too.
Well, this is a really broad question. Consider that every single analog-modeled plugin of any kind is a distortion plugin, so are we listing our favorite analog-sounding EQs here? Vintage compressor plugins? Even totally digital, non-vintage compression adds distortion. This isn't quite as broad as, but it getting close to, asking what our favorite FX plugins are overall. We use distortion in almost every stage of the entire workflow of a song, from initial sound design to EQ to compression to mixing to mastering.
So that said, my favorite distortion plugins are: the Lindell TE-100 EQ (tube modeling), the Vertigo VSM 3 harmonic generator, the UAD API 2500 compressor, and the Ozone 8 exciter module.
Saturn most of the time, Decapitator the rest.
