Clouds of Glory: The Life and Legend of Robert E. Lee, by Michael Korda.
What’s interesting and disturbing about Lee is the extent to which he was beatified during the Jim Crow era, to the point where he was put on the same level as Abraham Lincoln, two heroes tragically at odds. Slavery was barely mentioned in his biographies. Not only was Lee’s strong support of slavery and segregation glossed over, but so were his flaws as a general, such as his focus on Virginia and neglect of the rest of the Confederacy.
