god damn this is so nice..
How're you making your animations? Absolutely gorgeous
I would like to know too. The methods I've imagined (mostly math related) seem cumbersome.
This somewhat reminds of Def Jam: Fight for NY.
Yeah these are straight up DJFFNY vibe
Are you using some form of a rag doll for the death animation of do you have particular animations for hit reactions and death animations?
Ive been very impressed with your work. How tight are the controls? There are very little developers working on such detailed hand to hand combat and i know youre going to go far
That initial flurry of blocks 😍
Very nice. looks very satisfying to play, would love to try it one day
I honestly love this.
Reminds me of the Arkham games and Spider-Man PS4. Btw, a sound effect like one of those games I feel would make it all that much more satisfying.
x on their bodies.
Amazing stuff! Could you give a brief explanation on how this has been achieved?
The fighting mechanics are getting so good that the cartoony style is starting to detract from the game IMO. The lighting looks flat, especially with cast shadows, sorta uncanny valley. Lots of games rely on this style of graphics as a gimmick but the gameplay transcends that.
Might look better if you added a bit more light direction on the characters with a bit less cell shaded shadows and a darker and larger range of tone. Some hints of dark oversaturated fresnel sampling from the base diffuse that you could multiply against a low gloss specular. Combine that with some normals that round out some simplified muscle mass and it would do a lot, some very defined but well placed viens like on the hands and on the forehead but not going overboard with detail. Just some ideas.
Obviously still alpha and I have no idea what stage the graphics are in but just my 2 cents.
Truly phenomenal stuff here, can't think of a game that had fluid, multidirectional combat, with such natural telegraphing of impacts.
If i were in your shoes i'd commision a character artist to do 2 or 3 simple but stylized sculpts off your base meshes for a middleweight, heavyweight, and maybe an overweight. Might run you a few hundred bucks total to get some super high quality work if you can find the right artist. Considering the work is just generic physical sculpts I'd imagine you could find someone really quick for a really good price and it would really elevate the graphics with minimal implementation requirements. If you're smart about universal UV's you could get hundreds of combos out of different polygonal builds, normal map strength, and swapping out textures with wife beaters, or other shirts just painted right on.
Personally, I really like the style. I don't see how it detracts from the game.
I agree with you but I think it's too early to judge the graphics unless he's said otherwise. These may very well just be placeholder or unfinished graphics as he focuses on gameplay.
I don't think 3 sculpts would be enough though and he might as well just keep the graphics he has in that case. This is a case where it would be worth making a more serious financial investment into good graphics.
He doesn't need to get wrapped up in AAA graphics. Obviously this game is about gameplay over graphics, and with simpler models you open up a range of features you can add and an easy time animating. This simple style is more than enough for a small dev to handle and with nicer models you start needing nicer animation, and then the environment starts looking bad, and then the VFX is too simple and looks bad, etc. It's fine how it is.
Instead of stopping the frame can you make it go really slow? Because I don't know but I got a lag-like feeling? Maybe it is because it stutters too much. Or maybe it is because the camera is moving in and out too fast. Something is weird.
It is still awesome though!
Just make jackie chan a hidden character and name him chackie jan. that is all i request. thank you in advance for adding my idea into the game based on my reddit reply.
Oh man, that's badass.
ABSOLUTELY Love the motion!
This is so good! Feel nice and impactful, love it! Would love to see the behind the scenes setup, the transitions are so nice and smooth...
Got an example that you've made to show what you mean?
The animations are very cool and fluid!
Reminds me of the Yakuza games, really impactful combat/animations
wow! looks wonderful! a brand new beat em up?!
I’d love to pick your brain on the process you’ve taken for enemy AI when circling you, taking turns attack etc.
I currently have a CombatManager that keeps enemies at a distance and randomly picks enemies to attack every couple seconds or so, but I’m convinced I’m approaching it wrong!
There is no right or wrong answer for enemy AI. The best one is the one that fits the game most and feels the best. Complicated does not mean better and some sort of simple randomized state machine is more than enough.
Sht is amazing
Any chance of releasing as an asset?
I've been following this since you started posting and I'm so excited and impressed. You've made great progress.
Damn. Looks so cool
You have such a gem on your hands man, can't express it enough.
